OpenAI, the leading AI entity, and Anthropic, another leading player in the AI market, are redefining artificial intelligence (AI) economics but lack investor confidence. In this respect, OpenAI has generated up to $20B in terms of revenue throughout the past year, yet it is anticipated to lose up to $14B. Additionally, as per the data from Crypto Rover, Anthropic has hit $4.3B in yearly revenue. In this respect, the platform’s CFO warned that a slow revenue expansion could compromise financing for the exclusive computing deals.

The huge AI bet of both OpenAI and Anthropic is raising caution among investors. Particularly, OpenAI has gained a revenue of nearly $20B over the year, while projected to lose $14B. Apart from that, its total losses could surge to $44B by 2028. While discussing this, the platform’s CFO stated that the slow growth in revenue generation could lead to a compromise on the financing of the platform for the next computing deals.

In the same vein, Anthropic has hit an annualized revenue of $4.3B in April 2026 parallel to $19B in overall costs. So, it spent $3 for each $1 in revenue. Keeping this in view, both companies are anticipated to keep burning their cash until the next year at a minimum. This raises questions around their sustainability, although they lead the future revenue streams of the cloud industry.

At the same time, the scale of OpenAI and Anthropic’s commitments is huge. So, they both have pledged a total of $1.5T in the case of cloud spending in Amazon, Google, Oracle, and Microsoft, accounting for 43%-54% of the whole revenue backlog. Additionally, the AI commitment of both platforms come at a time when they are making staggering capital expenditures.

According to Crypto Rover, the current market scenario surrounding OpenAI and Anthropic embodies both peril and promise. Specifically, they occupy 50% of the upcoming revenue backlog of the biggest cloud providers of the year.  Currently, Anthropic and OpenAI are burning cash substantially.

Therefore, the trillion-dollar cloud allocations of both entities have efficiently underwritten the next epoch of infrastructure growth. Overall, this model’s sustainability depends on whether generative AI has the potential to provide meaningful returns beyond just pilot projects.
