Movers Steal TV and Computer Loaded With $10,000 in Bitcoin in Saratoga

According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, two people have been arrested and one is still being sought after they made off with a TV and an Apple iMac computer containing $10,000 in bitcoin from a family they were hired to help move.

Two of the alleged thieves were identified as Yessica Barajas, 18, and Welbar Quintanilla, 24, both of San Jose. Barajas has been arrested in connection with the case but Quintanilla remained at large Tuesday morning. A photo of a third yet to be identified suspect was released by authorities.

The three suspects were hired to help move belongings from the family's residence in the 20700 block of 4th Street in Saratoga into a moving truck for an agreed upon rate, according to sheriff's Sgt. Reginald Cooks.

He added: “Approximately 1-2 hours into the job, the three suspects demanded to be paid additional money to complete the task. hen the victims refuse to pay more than the agreed-upon rate, the three suspects decide to compensate themselves, by forcibly taking the victims TV and Apple iMac computer valued at $3,000.”

What the suspects apparently didn’t know is that besides the computer being valued at around $3,000, it contained three times that amount in the cryptocurrency bitcoin. Through cellphone video footage and statements from the victims, responding sheriff's deputies were able to identify two of the three suspects as Barajas and Quintanilla.

The first suspect, 18-year-old Yessica Barajas of San Jose, was arrested the next day. She was booked on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy and is currently out of custody. A second suspect, Welbar Quintanilla, 24, of San Jose, was arrested Tuesday and booked on suspicion of robbery and violating parole. The third suspect is unidentified at the time of reporting.

The incident remains under investigation and sheriff's officials have requested anyone with any information about it to call 408-808-4431.
