One of the biggest threats to digital security is data leaks. At a time when business models of companies are built around the collection and analysis of data. Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke about the privacy concerns of users and GDPR extensively during his time at the ICDPPC 2018 event. He shared some snippets from his address in a Twitter thread which was retweeted by Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin who applauded Apple for its commitment to privacy.

Apple’s Stance on Privacy

Cook wrote on Twitter that “privacy is a fundamental human right.” He went on to say that GDPR has shown everyone the way on how political will and good policy can help in protecting the users. He also noted that companies should de-industry customer data and not collect user data in the first place. Users too should know that their data is being collected and must always be aware of the reason behind the data collection.

To conclude the threat, Cook wrote:

“Technology is capable of doing great things. But it doesn’t want to do great things. It doesn’t want anything. That part takes all of us. We are optimistic about technology’s awesome potential for good — but we know that it won’t happen on its own.”

Buterin’s Applause for Apple

Buterin quoted Cook and wrote:

“Very happy that Apple takes privacy seriously to the extent that it does.”

Vitalik Buterin previously noted that he had become more concerned with privacy over the years. In a long Reddit thread, he talked about his views on privacy. He noted that people should be free to “optimize their own happiness” without caring about what other people think of them.

The Russian-Canadian developer’s tweet was met with some applause and a few questions about Apple’s commitment to privacy. Some users commented that Apple’s vow for privacy is a smoke screen as the company strengthens its competitive advantage by lobbying for policies that could potentially cause problems for its competitors.

However, across Twitter, some users pointed to Apple’s questionable privacy practices in China. The former security chief of Facebook recently criticized the company for restricting Chinese users from installing VPN and ERE messaging apps. The company also moved iCloud data into a PRC-controlled joint venture.
