UAE’s Ministry Of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) To Put Digital Health Data On Blockchain

2020-2-4 23:54

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) in partnership with other government agencies in the UAE has rolled out a blockchain-based platform to store health data, Cointelegraph reports.

According to a local news outlet in the country, The Emirates News Agency, the new blockchain-based platform is primed to enhance efficiency in the health ministry as well as other authorities dealing with health issues. The platform will allow the users to streamline how they find healthcare institutions as well where to look for licensed doctors and professional technical experts. The users will also have the capacity to inquire on medicine supply chains.

Speaking to journalists, the Director of public health policy, explained that the blockchain-based platform will play a vital role in securing a database that cannot be altered, decentralized and encrypted. Dr. Lubna Al Shaali also revealed the platform will enhance data security as the validity and reliability of the data will be guaranteed.

The ministry revealed that the new platform also comes with AI functionalities. These functionalities are expected to improve the provision of smart medical solutions in line with the country’s Centennial 2071.

According to Coingraph’s report, about 80 percent of the total government agencies and entities in UAE are now using blockchain technology. Just recently, Dubai’s department of economic development, announced that it was migrating to a new unified business blockchain-based registry which will enhance Dubai’s simplicity of doing business ranking. The new platform is also expected to make it easy for insurers to monitor trade licenses as well as corporate registries.

The health sector in the country will have immense benefits since blockchain-based platforms are transparent, decentralized and highly secure. This will enhance how the sector manages its data ranging from sensitive patient records to financial records. However, there are various challenges ahead like how the platform will be adopted by the users. In addition, blockchain-based solutions have faced challenges in many fronts especially in relation to regulation and ease of use more so among the citizens who might lack basic computer skills.
