Just days after the TRON Foundation officially acquired BitTorrent, the torrent software company has announced its candidacy for a position as a TRON Super Representative.
Unlike other cryptocurrencies, which usually involve decentralized mining or staking that can be freely participated in, TRON is based on a delegated proof of stake (DPOS) mechanism with elected entities:
“To achieve high speed data processing, a compromise has to be made to the degree of decentralization. This is how DPOS works… TPOS, TRON’s [DPOS derived] consensus mechanism, reflects our belief that there should be incentives for token holders to vote by making adjustments to DPOS.”
This means that token holders elect a number of Super Representatives that represent their desires. Elected entities are then given the ability to validate the blockchain.
TRON is strongly advocating for BitTorrent to become a Super Representative, claiming that it is “perhaps the most qualified” candidate for that title. TRON advocates for BitTorrent on the basis of its strength and staying power: the BitTorrent protocol was invented over 15 years ago, is still is the largest decentralized network in the world, and is capable of sending large amounts of information quickly.
The above qualities are seemingly in line with the values of the crypto community. However, DPOS is often a controversial system, as communities fear it will lead to too much centralized control. EOS, which also is DPOS-based, was heavily criticized after its elected block producers decided to freeze accounts, leading the platform to amend its constitution.
On one hand, BitTorrent’s subversive reputation may lead users to trust it in a system that demands centralization. In the past, BitTorrent’s creator, Bram Cohen, has also weighed in on controversial issues close to the cryptocommunity and has launched a competing cryptocurrency. On the other hand, BitTorrent may be seen as the uncomfortably large company that it is: the BitTorrent-owned uTorrent is also a candidate, potentially giving the company two of the 27 slots.
In any case, BitTorrent is certainly one of the most recognizable candidates, which will likely help its campaign.
